Eco-Friendly Fountain Pen Packaging: Behind the Scenes | Provincial Pen Co: Reduce - Reuse - Recycle
Ever ordered a fountain pen, ink, or other stationery supplies from Provincial Pen Co. and wondered why your packing materials look like a mix of biodegradable peanuts, recycled paper, or reused bubble wrap?
We know that no system is perfect, and we aren't always able to reuse 100% of everything or source completely recycled supplies every single time. However, whenever we do need to order new packaging supplies, we try to buy affordable, biodegradable, or recycled options when possible.
The biggest secret to our shipping process comes down to one simple commitment: we try to reuse almost everything we get. That means if you open a shipment from us and find traditional plastic bubble wrap or those heavy-duty foam packing peanuts, don't worry—it probably doesn't mean we bought new plastic! It simply means we are upcycling and reusing materials that were sent to us so they get another life before hitting a landfill.
Upcycling in the Mailroom
Whether it’s incoming business inventory from our suppliers or packages we receive at home, we keep the peanuts, bags, bubble wrap, and other packing materials. Instead of throwing them away, we route them right into our mailroom and upcycle them to protect your pens and inks.
Because we try to give existing materials a second life before buying new, your package might arrive with an eclectic mix of different shipping supplies inside. Reusing what already exists is one of the ways we try to lower environmental impact and keep single-use items out of landfills.
For the items we can't reuse in packaging, we were excited to learn about a new local sustainability effort here in Cañon City - Apex Solutions just announced free community recycling, which will help us divert even more waste!

Beyond the Business
Our sustainability efforts don't stop at mailers and boxes. We look for creative ways to repurpose materials in every aspect of our lives and shop:
Sawdust & Scrap Wood: Sawdust from wood turning and scrap wood pieces that serve no manufacturing purpose get burned in our wood-burning stove to heat our space during the winter.
Paper Products & Homemade Logs: Scrap paper, cardboard strips, and un-reusable paper packaging get rolled and pressed into homemade fire logs or used as tinder for our wood stove.
Home Inbound Packages: Personal household deliveries yield perfectly good boxes, paper bags, and packing materials that we save and reuse for your orders.

Global Brand Innovations & Eco Packaging
Working with pen and ink manufacturers around the globe gives us a front-row seat to different international environmental standards and innovative packaging approaches:
European & German Partners (DeAtramentis, Bock, etc.)
Many of our European partners are bound by strict environmental regulations regarding single-use plastics. German suppliers, for instance, are restricted from using traditional plastic packing peanuts. Instead, they protect products using recycled paper during international shipping. We retain all of this paper and reuse it for domestic orders—making overseas shipping waste work twice.
Robert Oster Signature Inks (Australia)
Robert Oster takes a distinct approach to reducing waste:
No Outer Retail Boxes: Unlike brands such as DeAtramentis, KWZ, or Ferris Wheel Press, Robert Oster inks do not come wrapped in individual cardboard boxes. Robert Oster views outer box packaging as unnecessary waste that goes straight to the trash.
Recycled PET Bottles: The inks are bottled in recyclable PET plastic.
Reusable Wholesale Crates: They ship bulk orders to retailers in durable, reusable plastic containers rather than disposable materials. We reuse these heavy-duty plastic boxes to carry inks safely to pen shows and events!
Exacompta Group/Exaclair, Inc (France)
The French stationery group behind Clairefontaine and Rhodia continues to expand its recycled product lines:
Rhodia: They have broadened their line of high-quality, fountain-pen-friendly recycled paper notebooks and pads.
Clairefontaine: Known for their exceptionally smooth paper, Clairefontaine extensively uses PEFC and FSC-certified pulp from sustainably managed forests, while also expanding their dedicated recycled notebook lines—proving you don't have to sacrifice fountain-pen performance for eco-friendly stationery.

The Bottom Line
When your Provincial Pen Co. order arrives, the box might feature a unique mix of materials—reused paper from Germany, repurposed air pillows from home shipments, or plastic peanuts from one of our partners, or biodegradable peanuts we sourced ourselves. It might not always look uniform, but every package reflects our genuine effort to reduce waste, reuse what we have, and give materials a second life.
Thank you for supporting small business and joining us in making the fountain pen community a little greener!
