What characteristics make paper "fountain pen friendly"?

Fountain pen friendly paper is engineered to work harmoniously with fountain pen ink and nib characteristics. Key features include:

Smoothness: A smooth, even surface minimizes friction between the nib and the paper, providing a crisp, controlled line. Many fountain pen aficionados cite papers with a silky coating—such as Tomoe River papers—as ideal because ink sits on top of the smooth surface rather than being overly absorbed 2.

Low Absorbency: Fountain pen paper is designed to resist rapid ink absorption. When ink isn’t immediately soaked in, it allows the ink’s color and sheen to emerge as intended and reduces issues such as feathering and bleed‑through.

Proper Weight and Coating: Although “lighter” papers (with lower GSM) may seem less protective, many fountain pen-friendly papers incorporate special layered coatings that allow ink to remain on the surface for a period, preserving subtle variations in tone and allowing the handwriting to stand out .

These qualities not only help maintain the pen’s performance over time but also enhance the overall writing experience.
